Books from BoxesLondon exhibition 10 - 17 Nov 2021 Jess Allen lives and works in a remote part of Cornwall. Her mediative still life paintings have been frequently compared to the work of Morandi, and her studio practice has a definite parallel with his, for it's separation from the fast paced and predominately urban contemporary art world.
Although based in observation, her painting practice is philosophical in its approach, with a paring down of detail to represent and signify a minimalist viewpoint. Working in the silence of looking, her works suggests a slowing down of time. Appreciating the unnoticed, and the understated, they are about quietness and solitude, and resonate with 'taking time out'.
